The Adventure Begins
The feeling after the first plane took off was exhilarating and terrifying. I was forced to relinquish control of my fate. It was in the hands of God and the pilot. However, it also meant there was no turning back. Sure, I could technically still pull out and fly back home after getting to my first stop, but still. I figured I had already gotten that far. No sense turning back. However, the delays due to technical and maintenance issues did not put me at ease in the slightest.
I kept thinking about Jonah. The story from the Bible where God told Jonah to go to Nineveh but he didn't. Instead, he hopped a boat and sailed away in hopes of escaping God's request. There ended up being a perilous storm which had the captain and crew afraid for their lives. Jonah knew why the storm had come and voluntarily cast himself into the sea at which point the waters calmed immediately. Jonah then was swallowed by a big fish and dwelled in its belly for three days and three nights. Without getting into theology, I feared a potentially similar fate for myself. I realize now how silly it sounds, but at the time, the fear and doubt that plagued me prevented me from seeing clearly.
I wish I had been more familiar with the verse from 2nd Timothy 2:13, "For even if we are faithless, he remains faithful for he cannot deny himself."
